About Ohio ADDL

Our History

Double Dutch is a lightning-quick team sport involving two jump ropes, turned in eggbeater fashion in opposite directions, around one or two jumpers,.The sport was created in the early 1970’s in New York City.  By the 1980s, Double Dutch was established in Columbus, Ohio under the leadership of Ms. Marcine Early at schools and the YWCA. In Cincinnati, the first formalized competitive program began at the West End branch YMCA in 1989 under the supervision of Ms. Gayle Brock. Though the competitive sport of Double Dutch began in New York City, Double Dutch is now practiced in numerous U.S. states and as far away as Paris, France and Japan.

Gayle Brock has a Master's Degree in Exercise Physiology, minoring in dance at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. As a former gymnast, she grew to be a valuable resource for the Ohio ADDL State Representative at that time, as well as leadership at the national ADDL level. Over the years Gayle became the State Representative for Ohio, assisted in re-writing the ADDL manual, teaching numerous workshops statewide and nationally, training coaches and judges in all components of competitive Double Dutch with focus on the Freestyle event. Today Gayle Brock is one of two top world Freestyle Judges for the ADDL. (American Double Dutch League).

Under Gayle's leadership structured programs soon expanded to the Madisonville, Lincoln Heights, Gamble Nippert and Melrose YMCA branches, and to Skyline Community Center, Sabis International School and the W. Mallory Center. Because of successful programs at these locations and through the leadership of Brock – who became coordinator of the Cincinnati League, and a state official and world freestyle judge – the Cincinnati Rope Twisters Double Dutch League was formed in 1992.

Empowering Through Double Dutch

Cincinnati Rope Twisters

Established in 2017, under the leadership of Elaysha Wright-Benson & Tennia Sims the Cincinnati Rope Twisters is a Double Dutch team. As former World Champions themselves they are committed to promoting physical fitness, educational excellence, and academic achievement. Through teamwork, discipline, and high-energy training, our athletes build confidence, coordination, and leadership skills both on and off the ropes. Rooted in the Cincinnati community, they empower youth to jump higher — in sport, in school, and in life.

Cincinnati Premier Double Dutch

At the Cincinnati Premiere Double Dutch chapter of the Ohio ADDL, we are dedicated to promoting physical fitness through the art of Double Dutch jump rope. Our mission is to inspire youth to achieve educational excellence while fostering character and leadership development.

History of Double Dutch in Ohio

In Cincinnati the sport of Double Dutch has blossomed into one in which youth from various backgrounds can develop and display their skills. The Cincinnati program has grown to involve more than 200 youngsters and risen to prominence, winning titles at the State and World level.  Youth travel both in and out of state as they participate in city, state or world competitions or perform in demonstrations. Team members practice 2½ hours, 2 – 3 days each week during a season that runs from September to May. Participants also have to keep their grades up or risk exclusion from the team. Double Dutch participants can compete through high school and beyond in an open division. They learn many things beyond Double Dutch including caring, honesty and respect for each other, their leaders and their families.
